The Real Ben Nelson

Senator Ben Nelson has, over his entire term as US Senator proudly claimed to be an independent voice for Nebraska, fiscally conservative, and pro-life.  Given his sell-out in the Health Care bill, I thought it’s high time to take a look and see how Sen. Nelson votes.  I will cover just the key issues, spending and taxes, abortion, and also how he votes for judicial nominees.

Spending and Taxes:  In the last year, Sen Nelson has yet to say NO to a spending bill.  Here are the votes and the bills:

01/28/2010 Increasing the Public Debt Limit and Reinstating PAYGO
HJR 45
Y Bill Passed – Senate
(60 – 39)
12/24/2009 Increasing the National Public Debt Limit
HR 4314
Y Bill Passed – Senate
(60 – 39)
02/13/2009 2009 Economic Package
HR 1
Y Conference Report Adopted – Senate
(60 – 38)
02/10/2009 2009 Economic Package
HR 1
Y Bill Passed – Senate
(61 – 37)

It is easy to see Sen Nelson has consistantly voted to increase spending, with the exception of one project.  He voted to cut funding to the F-22 project, which is the most advanced fighter jet in the world.  To be fair, that is the only military project he has voted against, but it’s interesting that he chooses to be fiscally responsible with the military.

Abortion:  This was a difficult issue to track.  He has voted to restrict funding for    abortion in some bills, but in some others he voted for the funding.  To be fair NARAL (a pro-kill your baby group, a real abortion nazi group) gives Sen Nelson a 7% rating.  That suggests Sen Nelson is 93% pro-life.  The most important thing to take from any of Nelson’s abortion stances was his last move.  After promising to hold strong on the abortion issue within the Healthcare bill, and not stand for any federal funding of abortions, Sen Nelson sold out to allowing states to decide if they want to use your money for abortions.

Judicial Nominees:  The short story, Sen Nelson has not voted against any judicial nominee from either Bush or Obama.  Sounds good, but what good is it to be a simple “yes” man.  It is the job of the senate to advise and consent on the nominee’s, and Obama has brought up two in particular that are not friends of the Constitution.  I am referring to Sonia Sotomayor, Supreme Court, and David Hamilton, Seventh Circuit.

  • Sonia Sotomayor is no stranger to the Supreme Court, she has had 6 of 8 rulings of her defeated in the Supreme Court.  The most famous case involved her allowing reverse discrimination in a case against a fireman.  Now it looks like the fox is in the hen house.
  • David Hamilton is no friend to the Constitution or Christians.  One of his rulings that got over turned dealt with Hamilton ruling that the Indiana State House could not mention God’s name on the floor of the Indiana House.  Prayers in Islam were to be allowed, according to Hamilton.

Healthcare:  It is well known that Sen Nelson sold out on the Healthcare issue.  During the debates he said he did not like the taxes contained within the bill.  Nelson did NOTHING to get rid off, or curtail any of the taxes within the bill.  Every body who has a job can thank Nelson for hiking their taxes, if this bill goes through.

Senator Nelson can not claim to be fiscally conservative, nor can he claim to uphold his vow to protect the Constitution of the United States.  We need a senator who will truly represent Nebraska, and stand up for Nebraskans and the Constitution.
