Stimulus Funds and Squirrel Bridges

Stimulus funds at work! Well, not anymore.   Arizona was going to use stimulus funds to pay for squirrel bridges!

ABC reported on the original story, where Arizona’s Department of Roads was going to use stimulus funds to build 41 squirrel bridges to protect an endangered squirrels from becoming road pancake.

Apparently there are 250 Mount Graham red squirrels that are threatened by their own game of chicken with passing motorist.

ADOT’s answer:  Build bridges the squirrels can cross without being flattened.  Questions immediately come to mind.  How can we be sure the squirrels will use the bridges?  Would there have been signs to direct the squirrels to the bridges?  If chipmunks can talk and make movies why couldn’t a squirrel read?

After ABC released the story Arizona decided to drop the idea of the bridges.  Too bad, it probably made more sense than most stimulus projects.
