Ronald Reagan once said that “Facts are Stubborn Things.” This is a quote that Matty has for his signature on his email and it always makes me stop and think, especially when I see stories like the one I got in my inbox just a short while ago.
Before I write about this, I admit that I normally don’t pay much attention to the stories that come into my inbox. Usually, an extreme right (or in my case, an extreme left) winger is usually trying to tell me how wrong I am because I didn’t observe Earth Day in any real way because I thought Easter Weekend was more important. How wrong I am because I would prefer to see human beings stay at work over saving some crab I’ve never heard of. How wrong I am for not really caring whether Obama was born here or not because I thought it was pointless to argue anyway and made the Republican Party people buying into this look like a bunch of toothless Jethros in the process. (Sorry to anyone name Jethro reading this.)
This email, on the other hand, really caught my attention because of the images of veterans that were in it and what was said.
For those of you with a weak stomach…look at the pictures above and below anyway. This is what our veterans go through to follow our countries bidding and help keep us safe. Whether you or I agree or disagree with the wars, the veterans of our armed forces earn and command our highest respect. After you are done looking, read on below as to why I get so mad at both parties in Congress.
This Marine has went through the kind of hell that none of us can really imagine. He did it, as so many veterans do, so that people like me can go about our lives, raising our families and making fun of liberals all the way. All kidding aside, a US male or female soldier gets to keep a whopping 50% of his pay for serving our country 20 years while Congressmen get to keep 100% of their pay for serving one term. The closest thing that they get to combat is the paper cuts they get when reading 2000 page plus budgets! On top of it, FoxNews reports Monday that that the staffers of Congress family members are exempt from having to pay back student loans. All I have to say to that is WHAT THE…you fill in the blank.
Don’t misunderstand me on this issue: Our country cannot afford to pay the debts we have now. We are in no position to pay the millions of veterans we have in this country 100% of their wages, as much as we wish we could. However, we sure as hell do not need to be paying Senator Nelson’s, Congressman Fortenberry’s (2 Nebraska Congressman) 100% of their salary and making their staffers exempt from student loans. I’ll be paying on mine until two years after I’m dead!
If the veterans of this country cannot get 100% after twenty years of service, than neither should our Congressmen.
If the House and Senate don’t have the guts to stand up for what is right, than we do need a Constitutional Amendment to cut some of the fat that they are not willing to do for themselves. We should rename Congress Porky Pig’s house, for they can never stop with the pork, for themselves or for the districts they represent! You can read the 28th Amendment below and realize that veterans and Congressman should be treated equally, whether you are a Republican or Democrat.
Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States.”
Congressman and Veterans should be treated the same on this issue, without exception!
