President Obama and Eric Holder are the fortunate recipients of the Weinergate scandal. Why is that? At the same time Weinergate hit the press, Rep. Darrel Issa CA. and Rep. Charles Grassley, IA. were set to issue subpoenas to members of the ATF, for an undercover operation called Project Gunrunner or now known as Gunwalker.
The story, reported on by only CBS, Fox News, and Andrew Breitbart weaves a tale about the ATF allowing the sale of guns to people the ATF knew were a part of a Mexican drug cartel. As you can image that lead to problems, a dead Federal agent. Now the problem is Eric Holder is standing in the way of the truth in this case.
Interviews given by some ATF officials tells a horrible story:
ATF was alerted to suspicious buys at seven gun shops in the Phoenix area. ATF watched as Jamie Avila, a suspicious buyer the ATF was watching and other suspects bought huge quantities of weapons supposedly for “personal use.” They included 575 AK-47 type semi-automatic rifles. ATF managers allegedly made a controversial decision: allow most of the weapons on the streets. One agent called the strategy “insane.” Another said: “We were fully aware the guns would probably be moved across the border to drug cartels where they could be used to kill.”
It is believed that upwards of 2,500 guns hit the streets illegally while the ATF watched, some of the guns being 50 caliber Barrett sniper rifles, a rifle used by our own military snipers.
CBS News had been told at least 11 ATF agents and senior managers voiced fierce opposition to the strategy. “It got ugly…” said one. There was “screaming and yelling” says another. A third warned: “this is crazy, somebody is gonna to get killed.” Sure enough, the weapons soon began surfacing at crime scenes in Mexico – dozens of them sources say – including shootouts with government officials.
It didn’t take long before Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered by the Mexican drug cartel with one of the guns the ATF let walk. Might that mass grave in Texas have anything to do with this?
Currently we are dealing with a Justice Department that is ignoring subpoenas in the face of republican pressure and pressure from 31 House democrats. The 31 democrats sent a letter to President Obama urging the President to “instruct the Department of Justice to promptly provide complete answers to all Congressional inquiries on this issue.”
Watch the embedded video to find out how this issue goes all the way up to Washington, to possibly include the President, but certainly Eric Holder.
If the Obama administration continues to stonewall and bury this issue, it could be bigger than Watergate. Remember it wasn’t the crime but the coverup that brought down President Nixon.
UPDATE: In Nixonian style, the Obama administration is lashing out at the whistleblower in the ATF. Instead of firing anybody responsible for “Project Gunrunner” the Obama administration is going after the whistleblower. Vince Cefalu , a 24 year veteran of the ATF , has been forced to turn in his badge and gun even though all of his claims were validated by other ATF members. This smells of a big cover up high up in the Obama administration. Obama needs to get in front of the public and utter the words, “I am not a criminal“.
